The Civil War marked one of the first widespread uses of photography to capture conflict.

Although the images can be challenging to view, they serve as a record of our troubled history and an important step in the birth of photojournalism. The images, largely produced by employees of Mathew Brady, changed hearts and minds in their own day and still compel strong emotions today.
