Illuminated manuscripts are hand made books that feature beautifully written text, decorated initials, and luminous colorful illustrations, often set on gleaming gold leaf backgrounds.
These book illustrations are sometimes referred to as “miniatures”, but there's nothing minute about their significance in European art history. The new Christian faith was instrumental in spurring the invention of the bound book in the 4th century AD, and it was through the inventiveness of illuminators that some of the greatest masterpieces of western art were produced. Enjoy a world of luminosity in this presentation.
