Often overlooked, newspapers have a wealth of information that can help family researchers. Obits are probably the most looked for records. Other articles of genealogical value include marriage announcements, school records, death notices, business ads, and so much more. We will explore some of the ways to find the stories that can be found in newspapers. We’ll also discuss where to find them and provide tips on how to search some databases.

Julie Callahan has a master’s degree in library science and is a retired librarian and genealogist. She worked for the Columbus Metropolitan Library for 33 years as one of their Genealogy Specialists. Since retiring she continues to share her extensive knowledge by teaching genealogy to others.
